Unfortunately, even if it was not really a storm, during the rain season especially in May and June, a very strong heatwave caused a lot of trouble to our corals and the ones in the neighborhood.
When we came back to Feridhoo, after the summer, the nurseries were full of bleached and dead corals.
This is caused by the rising temperature of the Ocean, that forces the corals to let go of the zooxantellae, the alge that help them get nutrients with the photosyntesis.
Bad news is that corals might be able to go back to a pristine state only if the temperature of the water goes down again.
As per today, the ocean is getting warmer and warmer and it is hard to tell how long the corals are going to be able to adjust to the variation.
We will keep doing what we are doing, helping the reef one coral at a time.
In the meantime it is important that everyone will learn about the bleaching phenomenon and about what is happening to our reefs!
Stay tuned for more news.
